Requirement for nanny or caregiver in Canada

Families need a caregiver for various reasons. Some need help with small children; some need help with elderly parents; and some have a handicapped family member who is not able to function independently.

You should always look for a caregiver that has experience in the specific area of the field. If you need a caregiver for your autistic child, the caregiver should have some experience in a similar environment. Your parents would be probably not very happy with a caregiver whose only experience is with small children – the job description is entirely different.

The right qualifications are very important. Not only to get the possible employee in your circumstances, but also for the outcome of the process. You may like the caregiver you selected but if she is not qualified for the job, the visa office will refuse her application for a work permit.

Ask the right questions. Ask for references. If you are not comfortable after the first interview, ask the agency for another. Interview more than one caregiver before you make the decision. In the end, the caregiver will live with you, 24 hours a day. She will become a family member. You have to be satisfied that she is the right one.

If you are reluctant to use an agency, you will have to do a lot of research to do it right. You may feel that the agencies are not doing their job and have nothing to contribute to the process. This is not true. Find a reputable agency with a lot of experience and talk to them about their services. You will find out that their fees are usually a good investment.
