Why on earth would I want a male Caregiver?

There are many reasons for a family to consider hiring a male caregiver. (One of the agencies here in Canada came up with a great name for them - "Manny"! )

For children:

Many of the families in Canada have both the mother and father working. But the female nature is nurturing, and thus even if the woman has a demanding and challenging career, she tends to spend at least some time at home with the children. Men devote most of their time to their careers and often are more absentee fathers than a daily presence in their children's lives. This is not to say that there aren't men who will sacrifice their career to give their children a full-time father.

A male caregiver can create a balance between the presence of female authority and absence of male authority, so often seen in our families.

A male caregiver is more likely than a female to spend a lot of time outdoors, encouraging the children to leave the television and video games behind and engage in physical activities and teaching them to enjoy sports and games.

A male caregiver is more likely to enforce rules and promote order than a female caregiver who is more tolerant and benevolent and prefers to use a soft hand in solving conflicts. (This is not to say that the man would use force or violence!)

A male caregiver is more likely to give you a hand in those menial tasks like mowing the lawn, painting the basement, fixing that broken vacuum or change a light bulb. (Hmm... how many caregivers does it take to change... oh, nevermind.)

And when it comes to housekeeping, you would be surprised - men tend to be more inclined to clean up on the go and can involve children in the household chores easier than their female counterparts.

For disabled patients:

Of course, it is unlikely (but not unheard of) that a young girl or an elderly woman would be comfortable with a male caregiver helping her with her daily tasks. But think about a handicapped gentleman - wouldn't he be more comfortable with a male companion who, in addition to his caregiving tasks, would be able to offer comfort, friendship, and encourage self-reliance, independence and determination to overcome the burden of his affliction?

The United States and England have long ago recognized the importance of the male caregiver. The families in these two countries hire approximately the same number of men as women, both for children and adults, but especially for elderly, handicapped or disabled patients. Alzheimer's is a great example where a male caregiver would be more useful than a woman. Men are usually stronger, faster, and can handle absentminded patients with speed and efficiency, without embarrassing the patient.
