Live-in caregivers in Canada are covered by Employment insurance (EI). The purpose of EI is to provide benefits to qualified workers who lose their job through no fault of their own. You may be eligible to receive benefits while you are looking for another job. However, LCP participants are expected to find a new employer as soon as possible. While you are working, you pay into the employment insurance account through payroll deductions. The amount deducted depends on how much you earn. This deduction and your employer's contribution must be remitted to the government by your employer. Then if you lose your job, the EI account will pay you benefits if you qualify. For more information about employment insurance, contact a Canada Employment Centre once you are in Canada.

The Old Age Security program (OAS) provides for the payment of a monthly benefit to residents of Canada who are at least age 65. This program requires no direct contributions on your part. For additional information on CPP or OAS, go to
http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/asp/gateway.asp?hr=en/isp/oas/oastoc.shtml&hs=ozs

You should ask your employer for detailed written statement of all deductions every time you get a pay cheques. It is good to keep clear record of everything - you will need it when you are ready to apply for permanent residence.
